Mighty River Domain

Lake Karapiro is an idyllic setting for water sports and recreation, and plays host to some of New Zealand’s most impressive water sports events.

Mighty River Domain borders the lake, and is a valued community asset which provides the facilities and space to support the wide range of events held at the lake.

Mighty River Power and Waipa District Council established a unique sponsorship partnership in September 2009, which saw the domain re-named to Mighty River Domain. Mighty River Power’s sponsorship is supporting the significant domain upgrades being undertaken by the council. Council’s programme of works will see new facilities built on the domain, as well as upgrades to roading and infrastructure.

Events held at Mighty River Domain include Maadi Cup and National Championships rowing, international hydro planes racing, skiing and wakeboarding competitions, and the 2010 FISA World Rowing Championships. The Domain is home to Rowing New Zealand’s high performance centre, where the national elite rowing crews train year round, and home to the Karapiro Camping and Pursuits centre which facilitates various school and community group activities. Open to the public, the domain is a well used and valued community facility.
